Attack on Titan (Japanese: 進撃の巨人 Hepburn: Shingeki no Kyojin, lit. “The Attack Titan”) is a Japanese manga series both written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. It is set in a fantasy world where humanity lives within territories surrounded by three enormous walls that protect them from gigantic man-eating humanoids referred to as Titans. The series first began in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on September 9, 2009, and it has been collected into 28 tankōbon volumes as of April 2019. Attack on Titan has become a critical and commercial success. As of April 2019, the manga has 90 million tankōbon copies in print worldwide (80 million in Japan and 10 million outside of Japan), making it one of the best-selling manga series. It has won several awards, including the Kodansha Manga Award, Micheluzzi Awards, and Harvey Award.

Humanity has learned to live in complacency behind its high walls, protected from the giant Titans. But when a Titan-worshipping cult opens one of the gates, a Titan wreaks havoc, consuming the cultists. After the rampage is over, two young Survey Corps members are shocked to discover a pregnant woman’s partially digested corpse – with her baby still alive inside it!
